Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, and today I finally got around to it. I wanted to make some jeans shorts. You know, take some old jeans and turn them into something new. I had this pair of jeans that I hardly ever wore. They fit okay around the waist, but the legs were just too long and not really my style anymore.
First, I grabbed the jeans and laid them out on the floor. I put them on to check where I wanted to cut them. I decided to go for a mid-thigh length because that’s what I usually like. Once I had a rough idea, I took a piece of chalk and marked a line across each leg. I made sure the lines were roughly even, though I wasn’t too worried about perfection.
- Finding the Right Pair: I had a few old jeans, but this one pair seemed perfect for the project.
- Marking the Cut: Used chalk because it’s easy to see and wash off.
- Cutting Time: This was the scary part. Once you cut, there’s no going back!
Then came the cutting. I grabbed my fabric scissors – they’re super sharp and make a clean cut – and started cutting along the chalk lines. I went slowly, trying to keep the cuts as straight as possible. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but I managed to get through both legs without any major mishaps.

After cutting, I tried on the shorts to see how they looked. They were a bit rough around the edges, literally. I decided to fray the edges a bit to give them a more casual, worn-in look. I just used my fingers and a pair of tweezers to pull at the threads and loosen them up. It took a while, but I liked the effect.
The Result
I ended up with a pair of denim shorts that I actually like! They’re comfortable, they fit well, and they have that cool, lived-in vibe. Plus, I saved a pair of jeans from ending up in a landfill. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out, and I’m already thinking about doing this with another pair of jeans. It’s a simple project, but it’s really satisfying to turn something old into something new and wearable.
Next time, I might try a different style, maybe go for a shorter length or add some more distressing. There are so many possibilities! This whole thing got me thinking more about upcycling clothes, and I’m excited to try more projects like this in the future.
