Well, well, well, look at this, stinkin’ water problem, huh? Smells like rotten eggs, they say. Sulfur, they call it. Fancy name for somethin’ that just plain stinks. So, how do you get this here sulfur out of your well water? Let me tell ya, it ain’t rocket science.
First off, they say you gotta figure out what’s causin’ the stink. Is it them little sulfur bacteria critters, or is it just nature doin’ its thing, you know, stuff decayin’ and all? Don’t matter much to me, smells bad either way.
Now, some folks, they like to get fancy. Talk about chlorination, pourin’ bleach down the well. Says it kills them bacteria. Okay, sure, but bleach? That stuff’s harsh, and who wants to be drinkin’ bleach, even a little bit? They say you gotta mix it in buckets, half a gallon for every hundred feet of water. Sounds like a lot of work to me.

Then there’s somethin’ called hydrogen peroxide injection. Sounds even fancier, don’t it? They say it works real good, gets rid of all the stink, no matter where it comes from. But it probably costs a pretty penny, and who wants to spend all their hard-earned money on water, for cryin’ out loud?
But here’s somethin’ simple, somethin’ even I can do. They call it degassing. All you gotta do is pour that stinky water into a glass and let it sit. Yeah, just sit there, for a whole day, they say. Twenty-four hours. The air, it does somethin’ to the sulfur, makes it go away, they say. The smell, poof, gone! Now, that’s my kind of solution. Simple and cheap.
- But what if you need more than just a glass or two? Well, you might need a whole-house solution, they say. More complicated, more money, I bet.
- Maybe you gotta filter the water, like with one of them fancy filters. They got all kinds, big ones, small ones, expensive ones, cheap ones. Hard to know what to choose.
I heard someone talking about a water softener, too. Said it helps with the sulfur and other stuff in the water, makes it taste better and all that. But then you gotta buy salt, and keep addin’ it, and who needs another chore? I already got enough to do, thank you very much.
And don’t forget them aeration systems. They pump air into the water, kinda like that degassing thing, but on a bigger scale. Seems like overkill to me, but hey, maybe it works for some folks.
So, if it was me, I’d start with that degassing thing. Pour the water in a glass, wait a day, see if it still stinks. If it don’t, then you know that’s the way to go. If it does, well, then you gotta think about them other things, the bleach, the peroxide, the filters, all that fancy stuff. But for me, simple is always best. Ain’t nobody got time for complicated.
And you know what else? If you’re really worried about this sulfur water, you could just go talk to someone who knows about these things. A well expert, they call ’em. They can come out and look at your well, tell you exactly what’s wrong and how to fix it. Might cost you a bit, but at least you’ll know you’re doin’ it right. And that’s important, ’cause water, well, that’s somethin’ you need every single day. Can’t live without it, so you gotta make sure it’s good and clean, no matter how much work it takes. And that’s the truth, plain and simple.
