Okay, so I tried out this “paint by number” thing, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience! I picked up this kit called “Tree of Life,” which is supposed to be, you know, all symbolic and stuff. I saw it was inspired by some guy named William Morris, who’s apparently a big deal in the art world. Never heard of him, but the picture looked cool, so I grabbed it.
The whole point of these kits is that they’re supposed to be super easy. You’ve got your canvas with all these tiny numbered sections, and then a bunch of little paint pots with matching numbers. Basically, you just slap the paint onto the corresponding area. Sounds simple enough, right?
Well, I unpacked everything, laid it all out on the table, and got to work. First thing I noticed was that the canvas had like, a million tiny spaces to paint. I’m not kidding, some of these were smaller than a grain of rice! I started with the bigger areas, figuring I’d get those out of the way first. The paint was kinda thick, so I had to be careful not to glob it on.

Then, I moved on to the smaller sections, and that’s where things got tricky. My hands aren’t exactly the steadiest, and I kept accidentally painting outside the lines. It was frustrating, to say the least. I ended up using a toothpick for some of the really tiny parts, and even then, it was a struggle.
- Spent hours hunched over this thing, squinting at the numbers.
- My back started to ache.
- My eyes felt like they were going to cross.
But you know what? Slowly but surely, the picture started to come together. It was actually pretty satisfying to see those blank spaces transform into colorful leaves, branches, and all that other tree stuff. I had to take breaks every now and then, because let’s be real, staring at tiny numbers for hours on end is not exactly my idea of a relaxing afternoon.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I finished it! And I gotta say, it actually looked pretty decent. Not perfect, mind you, but definitely recognizable as a tree. I stood back, admired my handiwork, and felt a sense of accomplishment. I’m not sure if I’m ready to call myself an artist just yet, but hey, I painted a tree, and that’s something, right?
Conclusion?
If you’re looking for a project that will test your patience and your eyesight, then paint by number might be for you. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time and maybe invest in a good magnifying glass! It was definitely an experience. And, who knew it was inspired by that William Morris fella. Might have to look into more of his designs.
