Alright, so you wanna know about that “did exceedingly well” thing in the LA Times crossword, huh? I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I can tell ya a thing or two. It’s like when you do somethin’ real good, you know? Like, real, real good.
Now, this crossword thing, it ain’t somethin’ I do every day. I got chickens to feed, garden to tend to, and all that. But I hear folks talkin’ about it. They say it’s in that LA Times paper, which, let me tell ya, is a big ol’ thing. Too much news for my likin’, but some folks enjoy it.
So, this “did exceedingly well,” it’s a clue, see? They give you these words, and you gotta figure out what fits. Like a puzzle, only with words. Sometimes it’s easy, like “sun comes up in the…” and you know the answer is “east.” But sometimes, they get tricky, those crossword folks.

What does “did exceedingly well” even mean? Well, it means you did somethin’ great. Like, if you baked a pie and everyone said it was the best darn pie they ever tasted, you did exceedingly well. Or if you grew the biggest tomatoes in the whole county, that’s doin’ exceedingly well too. It’s just another way of sayin’ you did a bang-up job.
Now, they tell me this clue shows up in the LA Times crossword a lot. Appears on April 7th, 2024 they said, and even before that. They also got somethin’ called a “quick crossword,” sounds easier, huh? And a Sunday one, that’s the big one, folks spend all day on it, I reckon. They even got different levels of hard, Monday bein’ the easiest and Saturday the hardest. Sounds like a whole lotta work to me.
- They say there’s lots of answers to this “did exceedingly well” thing. More than 30, even 40 possible answers they say! But the one they talk about most is somethin’ like “TOREITUP.” Sounds kinda wild, doesn’t it? Like you really ripped into somethin’, in a good way, of course. You went at it and did a fantastic job.
- Another thing I heard is they got these other word games too. Sudoku, somethin’ with numbers, and word searches. Sounds like a whole lot of brain teasin’. Keeps folks busy, I guess. Me, I prefer workin’ with my hands, feelin’ the dirt and sun on my skin.
- This crossword thing has been around for a long time, they say. Started way back in the 1800s, some fella named Arthur somethin’ or other made it up for a newspaper. And now, they’re all over the place. Even got a famous lady, Mother somethin’ , who won some peace prize. Don’t see what that has to do with crosswords, but hey, maybe she was good at ’em too.
So, if you’re stuck on that “did exceedingly well” clue, maybe that “TOREITUP” answer will help ya. Or maybe it’s somethin’ else. You just gotta keep tryin’, I guess. That’s what they say about life too, ain’t it? Just keep pluggin’ away, and maybe you’ll do exceedingly well yourself.
And don’t get too hung up on it if you can’t figure it out. There’s more important things in life than crosswords. Like family, and good food, and a roof over your head. But if you enjoy it, then more power to ya. Just remember to come up for air every now and then, ya hear?
