Small Towns in Eastern Washington: A Real Look, You Know
Alright, so you wanna know about them small towns out in Eastern Washington, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t like them fancy cities on TV. Life’s different out here, plain and simple.
First off, you gotta understand, Eastern Washington is big. Real big. And it’s got all sorts of little places tucked away in the hills and valleys. Some are just tiny little spots, ya blink and you miss ‘em. Others are a bit bigger, got a store or two, maybe a gas station.

We ain’t got no ocean or nothin’ like that over here. Mostly, it’s just a lot of land, ya know? Farms, mostly. Wheat, apples, stuff like that. Hard workin’ folks out here, I tell ya. Gotta be, to make a livin’ from the land. The weather? Well, it can be hot as blazes in the summer, dry as a bone. Then winter comes, and it gets cold, real cold. Sometimes snows a bunch, sometimes not so much.
So, what kind of towns we talkin’ about? Well, some of them are old, been around forever. Used to be important back in the day, maybe for minin’ or farmin’ or somethin’. Now, some of them are practically ghost towns, hardly anybody left. Like that Liberty place, over in Kittitas County they say. Heard tell it used to be a minin’ town, but now? Just about empty. Sad, really. All that history, just blowin’ in the wind.
Then you got your farm towns. Little places, where everybody knows everybody. They got their grain elevators, their feed stores, maybe a little diner where you can get a decent cup of coffee and a slice of pie. Dayton, that’s down in the southeast part, they say it’s a nice little town. Don’t know for sure myself, never been, but heard tell of it.
- Farming is a big deal: Like I said, lots of farms. So, you see a lot of tractors, a lot of fields. Smell that fresh-cut hay in the summer, it’s somethin’ else.
- People are friendly: Most folks are good people. Wavin’ when you drive by, stoppin’ to chat if you got the time. We ain’t got much, but we got each other.
- It’s quiet: If you like peace and quiet, this is the place to be. No city noise, no traffic jams. Just the birds singin’ and the wind blowin’.
Now, some folks, they might say these towns are boring. Nothin’ to do, they say. But that ain’t true. You just gotta know where to look. There’s always somethin’ goin’ on, even if it’s just a town picnic or a high school football game. And the scenery, well, it’s somethin’ special. Rolling hills, wide-open spaces, sunsets that’ll take your breath away. And the stars at night, oh boy, you ain’t never seen so many stars. Clear as a bell, they are.
You want fancy shops and big-city lights, this ain’t the place for you. But if you want a slower pace of life, if you want to know your neighbors, if you want to see the real America, well, then maybe you should come on out and visit one of these small towns in Eastern Washington. Just don’t expect no fancy welcome wagon, ya hear? We ain’t like that. We just good, honest folk, tryin’ to make a livin’ and enjoy what little we got.
Some folks are lookin’ for them cute towns, you know, the ones they put on postcards? Winthrop, that’s one they talk about. Got some kind of theme going on, like an old western town or somethin’. La Conner, Sequim too, they say those are cute. But I’m tellin’ ya, the real beauty in Eastern Washington ain’t in the cute, it’s in the real. It’s in the hard work, the honest faces, the quiet nights. That’s what makes this place special, ya know?
So, next time you’re thinkin’ about takin’ a trip, don’t forget about us out here in Eastern Washington. We might not be much to look at, but we got heart. And that’s somethin’ you can’t find just anywhere.

And that’s all I gotta say about them small towns. You want more, you gotta come see for yourself. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got chores to do.
