Well, let me tell ya, is fashion art? That’s what they’re askin’. Now, I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I got eyes, don’t I? And I see them clothes, them fancy things they wear on the TV and in them magazines.
Some of it, I gotta say, it’s just plain silly. Looks like somethin’ the cat dragged in, all ripped up and whatnot. You wouldn’t catch me wearin’ that to the market, no sirree. But then, there’s other stuff, the kinda things that make you stop and stare. Beautiful colors, like a sunset over the fields, or fabrics that shine like the mornin’ dew. That, I reckon, that’s gotta be somethin’ special.
Is it art, though? That’s the big question, ain’t it? Folks paint pictures, and they call that art. They make statues out of stone, and that’s art too. So why not clothes? They’re makin’ somethin’ outta nothin’, just like them painters and sculptors.

- They take a piece of cloth, plain as dirt,
- and they cut it and sew it and turn it into somethin’ beautiful.
- They add beads and buttons and all sorts of shiny things,
- makin’ it sparkle and shine.
Sounds like art to me, but what do I know? I’m just an old woman who’s seen a thing or two.
Now, some folks say fashion is just about sellin’ clothes, makin’ money. And maybe they’re right, partly. Them big companies, they wanna sell you the latest and greatest, that’s for sure. But the folks who make them clothes, the designers, I think they got somethin’ more in mind. They got a vision, a feelin’ they wanna share with the world. They’re tellin’ a story with their clothes, just like a painter tells a story with his brush, or a writer tells a story with his words. Fashion design, that’s what they call it, and it’s more than just sewing seams. It’s about mixing colors and shapes, making something pleasing to the eye. It’s kinda like cooking a good stew, you need the right ingredients in the right amounts. And just like not everyone can make a tasty stew, not everyone can make beautiful clothes.
I remember back in the day, we didn’t have much. We made our own clothes, mostly. Simple stuff, just to keep us warm and covered. But even then, we tried to make things a little bit pretty, you know? A little bit of lace here, a little bit of embroidery there. We wanted to feel good, to look good, even if we didn’t have much money. And that, I think, that’s part of what fashion is all about. It’s about expressin’ yourself, showin’ the world who you are, or who you wanna be. It’s about feelin’ good in your own skin, and that’s no small thing, let me tell ya.
So, is fashion art? Well, like I said, I ain’t no expert. But I think it can be. When it’s done with care, with passion, with a real feelin’ for beauty, then yeah, I think it’s art. It’s wearable art, maybe, but it’s art all the same. And even if it ain’t always art, it’s still somethin’ special, somethin’ that can make you feel good, make you smile, make you feel like a million bucks, even if you’re just wearin’ a plain old dress from the store. It depends on what folks believe, I reckon. Some think art has to be in a museum, but I say it can be anywhere, even on your back. Fashion is about the beauty of clothes, how they are made and how they look. It’s a mix of different things – using your hands to create, understanding what looks good, and following what’s popular. It’s both art and knowing how to do things well. Just like making a good loaf of bread – it’s art if it tastes good and looks nice, but you also need to know how to bake!
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. Ain’t no time for fancy talk when your stomach’s rumblin’. But I hope I answered your question, or at least gave you somethin’ to think about. Fashion, art, it’s all in the eye of the beholder, like they say. And to me, sometimes, a pretty dress is just as beautiful as a sunflower in the field or a painting on the wall. It’s all about what makes you feel good inside, that’s the real truth of it all.
