Okay, so I’ve been playing a ton of Half-Life 2 lately, and one thing that always bugged me was the weapon spray. It felt like I was just spraying bullets everywhere and hoping for the best. So, I decided to actually figure out how to control it, and, man, it makes a huge difference.
My Experimentation Process
I started by just firing each weapon at a wall and watching where the bullets went. I did this a bunch of times, trying to get a feel for the pattern.
- SMG: This thing goes wild! It kicks up and to the right like crazy.
- Pulse Rifle: Better, but still has a noticeable upward climb.
- Shotgun: Wide spread, obviously, so more about getting close.
Then, I started experimenting with short bursts. Instead of holding down the trigger, I’d tap it quickly. Wow, what a change! My accuracy improved a ton, especially with the SMG.

Next up, I tried pulling down my mouse while firing. I focused on countering the upward movement of the recoil. For the SMG, I had to pull down and slightly to the left to compensate for that diagonal kick. It felt awkward at first, but I started getting the hang of it.
Putting it all Together
After messing around for a while, I jumped into some actual gameplay. I focused on:
- Using short bursts.
- Actively controlling the recoil by pulling my mouse down.
I was landing way more shots! I felt much more in control, and I wasn’t wasting nearly as much ammo. Even the SMG, which used to feel like a random bullet hose, became a pretty effective weapon.
It’s still something I’m working on. It takes practice to get the muscle memory down, but it’s totally worth it. I’m actually enjoying using the weapons now, instead of just feeling frustrated by the spray.
