Okay, so I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect black swimsuit. You know, the one that’s simple, chic, and makes you feel amazing? I finally decided to just make my own!
Finding the Right Fabric
First things first, I needed fabric. I headed to my local fabric store, which, let me tell you, can be overwhelming. So many choices! But I knew I wanted something durable, with good stretch, and obviously, black.
- I felt a bunch of different fabrics. Some were too thin, some too stiff.
- Finally, I found a nylon-spandex blend that felt just right. It had a nice weight to it, and good recovery (meaning it wouldn’t get all saggy after a few wears).
Choosing a Pattern (or Not!)
Next up: the pattern. I looked at a few online, simple one-piece patterns.

I grabbed some paper and started sketching. Modified the shape to raise the waist a little, and to make the curve of the bottom less aggressive.
Cutting and Sewing
Time to get down to business. I carefully laid out my fabric (making sure to follow the grainline – super important!), pinned my adjusted paper pattern pieces, and cut everything out. This part always makes me a little nervous, because once you cut, there’s no going back!
- Then came the sewing. I used my trusty sewing machine, and took my time.
- I started with the side seams, then did the shoulder straps. I made sure to use a stretch stitch so the seams wouldn’t pop when I moved.
- The trickiest part was probably the leg and arm openings.I used elastic, which means slow and steady.
The Final Result
After a few hours of work (and a few seam-ripping mishaps, let’s be honest), I had my swimsuit! I tried it on, and… I loved it! It fit perfectly, and it looked exactly how I imagined. Seriously, there’s something so satisfying about wearing something you made yourself. It’s not perfect, of course, there are a few wonky stitches here and there, but it’s mine, and I’m pretty proud of it. I think next time I might try a different neckline, but for now, I’m ready for the beach!
