Today, I decided to make a “how wonderful life is now you’re in the world” sign. It’s from that Elton John song, “Your Song.” I just love that line, and I thought it would be a sweet message to have hanging up.
Gathering My Stuff
First things first, I needed to get all my materials together. I went digging through my craft box and found:
- A piece of wood (I think it was leftover from an old project)
- Some white paint
- A couple of different sized paintbrushes
- Pencils
- My trusty sandpaper
- Black paint for the letters
Prepping the Wood
The wood was kinda rough, so I sanded it down to make it nice and smooth. Gotta make sure the paint goes on evenly, you know? I spent a good while on this, making sure to get all the edges and corners.

Painting the Base
Next, I painted the whole thing white. I did a couple of coats to make sure it was good and covered. It took a while to dry, so patience was key here. I went watched some TV shows, and came back later.
Sketching the Letters
Once the white paint was totally dry, I lightly sketched out the words with a pencil. I’m not the best at freehand lettering, so I took my time with this. Lots of erasing and re-doing until I was happy with how it looked. I wanted a kind of whimsical, slightly uneven look, so I didn’t stress too much about perfection.
Painting the Letters
This was the trickiest part. I used a thin brush and the black paint to carefully fill in the letters. My hand was a little shaky at first, but I got into a rhythm. I found that going slow and steady gave me the best results. I did have to touch up a few spots where I went outside the lines, but it’s all part of the handmade charm, right?
The Finished Sign!
After the black paint dried, I took a step back to admire my work. It wasn’t perfect, but I loved it! It had that rustic, handmade feel I was going for. I found a perfect spot for my “how wonderful life is now you’re in the world” sign. I love hand-made.
