Okay, so I’ve been meaning to do some quick getaways from Atlanta. You know, escape the city for a bit without spending a whole day driving. So, I started looking into places within a 3-hour radius. I figured that was a good sweet spot – far enough to feel like a change of scenery, but close enough for a weekend trip.
My Little Research Spree
First thing I did was, of course, hit up Google. I just typed in “cities 3 hours from Atlanta” and started browsing. There’s a lot of those list articles, you know, “Top 10 Getaways,” stuff like that. I skimmed through a few of those to get some initial ideas.
Then, I wanted to double-check the driving times. Cause, you know, sometimes those estimates are way off. So I used Google Maps and popped in a few of the cities that sounded interesting. I made sure to check the time during the times that I want.

The Contenders
After doing all that digging, I narrowed it down to a few places that seemed promising:
- Chattanooga, Tennessee: Seemed like a cool, outdoorsy place. Everyone talks about Lookout Mountain.
- Birmingham, Alabama: This one surprised me. I didn’t know much about it, but it looked like it had some cool history and a decent food scene.
- Greenville, South Carolina: Heard it was a cute, smaller city with a nice downtown area.
Making the Choice (and the Drive!)
Honestly, it was a tough call! They all looked pretty good. In the end, I went with Chattanooga. I think that’s where next week, my family’s going. I found a cool AirBnB, checked out some restaurant reviews, and planned a general route.
I’m planning to go other two cities, Birminghan and Greenville next time. I’ll keep you all updated on my trip.
