Okay, so I’ve been on this quest, right? A quest to find shows that give me the same feels as Firefly. You know, that awesome space western with the ragtag crew and the witty banter? Yeah, that one. It’s been a bit of a journey, I tell you.
First, I started by just plain old Googling. I typed in stuff like “Firefly similar shows,” “shows like Firefly,” you get the idea. I figured, hey, the internet knows everything, right? Well, it knows a lot, but sifting through it all was a bit of a pain.
My Research Method (aka Clicking Around Like Crazy)
I landed on a bunch of forum threads and “best of” lists. Lots of people recommending the same handful of shows. So, I made a list of the ones that popped up most often:
- Battlestar Galactica (the newer one): This one came up a lot. People said it had a similar “found family” vibe and a gritty, realistic feel.
- The Expanse : Apperently this show got a similar realistic space opera feel.
- Dark Matter: This one sounded interesting – a crew waking up on a spaceship with no memories. Intrigue!
- Killjoys: Bounty hunters in space? Sounded Firefly-ish enough to me!
- Cowboy Bebop: An anime! But hey, it has the space bounty hunter thing down. I am also a big fan of anime, so I decided to give a try.
Then, the real work began. I started watching! I figured I’d give each show at least a few episodes to see if it grabbed me.
Battlestar Galactica… wow. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s heavy. Way more serious and political than Firefly. The “found family” thing is there, but it’s buried under a lot of angst.I watched the first two seasons.
The Expanse…Now, I haven’t watched it yet. But it’s on my list!
Dark Matter… I gave it a shot. It was okay, but it didn’t quite have the same spark as Firefly. The characters felt a bit… generic, maybe? I watched one season, but didn’t feel compelled to continue. I felt it’s not the one I wanted.
Killjoys… This one was closer! It’s definitely got the fun, adventurous vibe, and the characters are pretty likeable. It’s not as deep as Firefly, but it’s a fun watch. I am still watching this one!
Cowboy Bebop… This one is different, but in a good way! The animation is beautiful, and the stories are a mix of funny, sad, and action-packed. It does the bounty hunting in the space. I am a big fan of animes so I think it is quite decent one.
So, that’s where I’m at! Still searching for that perfect Firefly replacement, but I’ve found some pretty good shows along the way. It’s a process, you know? A long, TV-watching process. But hey, someone’s gotta do it!
