Alright, so, I had this problem with my well water freezing up every winter. It was a real pain, let me tell you. So, I had to figure out a way to keep it from freezing, or else we’d be without water, and that’s no good for anyone.
First thing I did was check the well house. That’s the little structure we built to protect the well pump and the pipes. It made sense that if it was not well protected, then it could freeze. We made sure that it’s properly insulated. We used some of that foam insulation stuff, you know, the kind you spray in the cracks? We patched up any holes and made sure the door was sealing tight.
Then I focused on the pipes themselves. I noticed some of the pipes were pretty close to the outer walls of the well house, which means they were more exposed to the cold. I made sure that all the pipes were wrapped with insulation. It did help, and the pipes were not freezing as often as before, but it did not completely solve the problem. And the insulation between the pipes and the inside room is kind of useless so I just removed them.

Adding a Heat Source
The real game-changer was adding a heat source inside the well house. I thought that would work so I added a heat lamp. It’s a good heat source to prevent the pipes from freezing.
I also tried something, my neighbor told me that he was doing this trick and it worked for him. He said that by getting a plastic bottle, filling it with water, and adding a cup of salt, the water inside the bottle won’t freeze. I tried it and put the bottle in the water bucket. That bottle just floats around in there, and it actually helps keep the water in the bucket from icing over. It sounds weird, but it works!
The last thing I did was to inspect the wellhead itself. I checked it over real good, made sure there were no cracks or damage or anything like that. You don’t want any cold air getting in there.
So, that’s what I did to keep my well water from freezing. It was a bit of work, but it’s worth it to have running water all winter long. No more frozen pipes, no more hauling water from the neighbor’s. It’s a good feeling, let me tell you.
- Insulate the well house properly.
- Insulate the water pipes.
- Add a heat source to the well house.
- Use a saltwater bottle in the water bucket.
- Inspect the wellhead for damage.
This is how I made my life better, and maybe it can help you too.
