Okay, so I’ve been itching to get out of the city for a quick winter getaway, and let me tell you, planning this thing was a whole adventure in itself. I live in New Jersey, and I wanted someplace not too far, but different enough to feel like a real break. You know, trade the usual NJ scenery for something a bit more… wintery.
Researching Destinations
First thing I did was hit up my computer, of course. I spent hours going down rabbit holes, looking at all sorts of places. I knew I wanted mountains, snow, the whole nine yards. Places with cute little towns and maybe some fun stuff to do besides just staring at the snow, although I do love a good snow-staring session.
Choosing the Right Spot
Narrowing it down was tough! There are so many spots within driving distance. I finally settled on this place in the mountains – it just looked so rugged and beautiful in the pictures. Plus, they had all these winter activities, like skiing and snowboarding. I haven’t done that in ages, so I figured, why not? It could be a total disaster, or it could be awesome. Only one way to find out, right?

Packing for the Cold
Then came the packing. Oh boy. Digging out all my winter gear was like an archaeological expedition. I found hats I forgot I owned. I swear, I pulled out a scarf that was older than some of my coworkers. But hey, as long as it keeps me warm, right? I packed layers, like a smart person, but also made sure I had some cute outfits for just, you know, walking around town and feeling like I’m in a Hallmark movie or something.
Hitting the Road
The drive up was… interesting. Traffic was a bit of a nightmare, as usual. But once we got past a certain point, the scenery started to change. Less concrete, more trees. And then, boom! Mountains. It was pretty awesome to see the landscape change like that. We even saw a bunch of dear.
Exploring the Town
We finally got to the little mountain town, and it was just as charming as I’d hoped. Snow everywhere, little shops all lit up, people bundled up in cozy coats. We checked into our cabin, which was super cute and rustic. It had a fireplace! I’ve always wanted a place with a fireplace. Then, we found this adorable little spot and had some hot cocoa.
Winter Activities
The next day was all about the winter sports. I decided to try snowboarding. It had been a while to say the least. Let’s just say I spent a good amount of time falling on my butt. But hey, I had fun, and that’s what counts. Plus, the views from the slopes were incredible. Totally worth the bruises, I think.
Cape May, NJ
On the last day, we decided to do something a bit different. We drove down to Cape May, which is right on the Jersey Shore. I know, the beach in winter? But it’s actually really cool. They have this whole holiday village thing going on, with trolley rides and festive lights. We even went to this seasonal dinner series they were having. It was a totally different vibe than the mountains, but just as fun in its own way.
Heading Home
And then, just like that, it was time to head back to reality. The drive home was a lot smoother, thankfully. I was tired, a little sore, but also super refreshed. It was exactly the kind of escape I needed.
Final Thoughts
So, yeah, that was my winter weekend adventure. It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely memorable. I proved to myself that I can still handle a snowboard and maybe, just maybe, I should add “snowboarder” to my resume. Also, I rediscovered my love for hot cocoa and fireplaces. I’m already thinking about where to go next year. Maybe somewhere with even bigger mountains? Or maybe I’ll try ice skating. Who knows! The possibilities are endless.

Anyway, I highly recommend a quick winter trip if you’re feeling stuck in a rut. Even a few days away can make a huge difference. Just don’t forget your warmest scarf!
