I wanted to become a cosmetic chemist, so I started by researching what I needed to study. I found out that the basic requirement is a bachelor’s degree in science, like chemistry, chemical engineering, or biology. Some people even mentioned cosmetic science or pharmaceutical science, but chemistry seemed like the most common path. So, I decided to focus on that.
I enrolled in a university and started my bachelor’s degree in chemistry. The courses were tough! I spent most of my days in classes like general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. We also had lots of labs, which were kind of cool because we got to mix chemicals and see what happened. I had to do lots of experiments and write tons of lab reports. It was a lot of work, but I found it pretty interesting.
- Spent countless hours studying and doing homework.
- Got better at lab techniques and understanding chemical reactions.
- Read tons of textbooks and research papers.
After I got my bachelor’s degree, I thought about getting a master’s degree in cosmetic science because some of the bigger companies seem to prefer that. But I decided to try my luck with just my bachelor’s degree first. I started applying for entry-level positions at cosmetic companies. It was a bit tough because I didn’t have any experience in the cosmetic industry. Most of the job descriptions I saw were asking for people with a background in cosmetic science. But I kept applying anyway.

I learned about some online resources and forums where people talked about formulating cosmetics. Some folks there were saying you could learn how to formulate on your own, without a formal degree. But it seemed like most of them still had a science background. I also saw some online courses about cosmetic formulation, but I wasn’t sure if they were worth it since I already had a chemistry degree.
I kept looking for jobs and finally got an interview at a small cosmetic company! They were looking for a lab technician, and even though it wasn’t exactly a cosmetic chemist role, I figured it was a good start. I got the job! My main tasks were to prepare samples, test raw materials, and help the senior chemists with their experiments.
Working in a real lab was very different from the university labs. I had to follow strict procedures and safety guidelines. I also learned a lot about the different ingredients used in cosmetics and how they interacted with each other. It was a great experience to work alongside experienced cosmetic chemists and see how they developed new products. I observed them closely and took notes on their processes. I also asked them a lot of questions, and they were always happy to share their knowledge with me.
After a year as a lab technician, I got promoted to a junior cosmetic chemist role! I started working on my own projects, developing new formulas for skincare products. It was challenging, but I loved it. I finally got to use my chemistry knowledge to create something new and exciting. I spent many days creating and testing innovative formulas for perfumes, lipsticks, lotions, makeup, hair dyes, soaps, and other products.
So, yeah, that’s how I became a cosmetic chemist. It took a lot of hard work, studying, and perseverance, but it was totally worth it. Now, I get to spend my days mixing chemicals and creating awesome beauty products. It’s a dream come true!
My key takeaways from this journey are:
- Get a solid education: A bachelor’s degree in chemistry is a must.
- Be persistent: Don’t give up if you don’t get your dream job right away.
- Gain experience: Even a lab technician job can be a great stepping stone.
- Keep learning: The cosmetic industry is always changing, so you need to stay updated.
- Network: Talk to people in the industry and learn from their experiences.
