So, I wanted to figure out what goes well with Gouda cheese. It’s one of my favorites, and I just got a big block of it from the store.
First, I did a little digging around online to get some ideas. I found a bunch of suggestions, like pairing it with fruits, nuts, and different drinks. Some folks even mentioned using it in cooked dishes. Seemed like Gouda was pretty versatile.
Then, I started experimenting in my kitchen. I sliced up some peaches and plums, grabbed a handful of cashews and pecans, and tried them all with the Gouda. The sweetness of the fruits and the crunch of the nuts really complemented the creamy, slightly nutty flavor of the cheese. It was a good combo!

Next, I thought about drinks. I’m not much of a wine person, but I had some Riesling and a Bock Ale in the fridge. The Riesling was okay with the Gouda, but the Bock Ale, with its richer flavor, was a better match. At least, that’s what my taste buds told me.
I also wanted to try cooking with the Gouda. So, I made a simple panini and melted some Gouda on it. It was delicious! I also shredded some into a chili I was making, and it added a nice creamy texture and a subtle cheesy flavor. I even tried it in mac and cheese, which was a total win. Turns out, melted Gouda is just as good as it is cold.
Key Realization
I discovered that Gouda is like a chameleon of cheese. It can be paired with a bunch of different things and still taste great. Whether it’s with sweet fruits, crunchy nuts, a good beer, or melted in a hot dish, Gouda always seems to work. It’s definitely going to be a staple in my kitchen from now on. After this whole cheese adventure, I’m pretty sure I could eat Gouda with just about anything and be happy!
