Okay, so today I was messing around with this idea of capturing “Still Life in Rio”, and let me tell you, it turned into a whole adventure. I started my day by wandering through the streets of Santa Teresa. You know those places that just scream ‘photograph me’? That’s Santa Teresa for you.
I walked down these cobblestone paths, and everywhere I looked, there was some crazy cool street art. I mean, vibrant colors splashed all over the place. It was like walking through a living art gallery. I took a bunch of photos, trying to get the vibe of the neighborhood, you know?
Sniffing Out Local Scents
Then, I got this wild idea to incorporate some local scents into my project. I remembered a perfume I had with yuzu, lemon, and ginger notes. So, I spritzed some on a piece of paper and kept it in my pocket. Sounds weird, I know, but I thought it might help me get in the mood.

- Strolled through Santa Teresa’s cobblestone streets.
- Snapped photos of vibrant street art.
- Carried a yuzu, lemon, and ginger-scented paper.
Mixing It Up with Coconut and Spice
Later, I stumbled upon this little market and found some coconut milk. I’ve always loved the smell of coconut – it instantly makes me think of beaches and relaxation. I bought a small carton and added a dash of pepper because why not, right? I kept sniffing this mix, trying to let the scent inspire my next steps.
Rum and Leather
As the day went on, I wanted to capture something a bit more rugged, more…masculine, I guess? So I went to a local bar and ordered a shot of rum. The smell of rum, mixed with the leather of the bar stools, was exactly what I was looking for. I even managed to get a small piece of leather from the bartender – he probably thought I was nuts!
- Bought coconut milk and added pepper.
- Ordered rum at a local bar.
- Got a piece of leather from the bartender.
Putting It All Together
By the end of the day, I had all these elements – photos of colorful streets, the scent of yuzu, lemon, ginger, coconut, pepper, rum, and leather. I spread everything out on my table and just started experimenting. I arranged the photos, played with the scents, and tried to create a still life that represented my day in Rio. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m pretty stoked about how it’s turning out. It’s messy, it’s unconventional, but it’s definitely got that Rio spirit.
Anyway, that was my day. Just a whole lot of walking, sniffing, and trying to turn random things into art. Hope you enjoyed this little peek into my chaotic creative process!
