Okay, so I had this little mystery on my hands – a buried well head. Yeah, you heard that right. It was like a treasure hunt, but instead of gold, I was after good old H2O. Here’s how the whole thing went down.
First Steps – Looking Around
First off, I remembered that the well should be somewhere near where the cold water pipe enters my house. Makes sense, right? So, I started my detective work on that side of the property. I walked around, eyes peeled, looking for anything that screamed “well here!”. I was on the lookout for those metal well covers or any casings sticking out of the ground. No luck at first, but I wasn’t giving up that easily.
Slightly More Technical – Drainage and Elevation
Then I recalled reading somewhere that wells are usually in spots with good drainage and are higher than the surrounding area. I started to pay attention to the lay of the land. Where did the water seem to flow after it rained? Which areas were slightly elevated? This narrowed things down a bit, and I felt like I was getting closer.

Getting My Hands Dirty – The Search Intensifies
Armed with this new strategy, I started circling the area again. Since the previous owner had the well built, the thing is, I didn’t know where to start! I kept thinking, “Where would I put a well if I were them?” I even tried to remember if they mentioned anything about it when I bought the place. Nothing. Zip. Nada.
Calling in the Experts… or Not
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Why not just call a professional?” Well, where’s the fun in that? Plus, I’m a bit stubborn and like figuring things out myself. But yeah, if you’re not up for an adventure, calling an expert is definitely the easier route. They have all the fancy tools and know-how.
The Metal Detector Idea
I remembered a tip I saw in an online forum – use a metal detector. Apparently, some well covers have a bit of rebar or other metal in them. I happened to have a buddy who’s into metal detecting as a hobby, so I gave him a call. He was more than happy to help. We spent an afternoon sweeping the area, listening for that tell-tale beep. We did find some random metal bits but nothing that looked like a well cover.
Persistence Pays Off!
Just when I was about to throw in the towel, I noticed a slightly different patch of grass near where we had been searching. It looked a bit out of place, almost like it had been disturbed. I got down on my hands and knees and started poking around. And guess what? Bingo! My fingers hit something hard and metallic. I started digging like a dog, and sure enough, there it was – the buried well head. Victory!
So, there you have it. That’s how I found my buried well head. It was a bit of a hassle, but totally worth it in the end. It’s a good reminder that sometimes the old-fashioned way of doing things, with a bit of persistence and maybe a metal detector, can be just as effective as calling in the pros. Plus, it makes for a much better story, don’t you think?
