Well, let me tell ya, I saw this thing the other day, got me thinkin’. It’s called “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it ain’t nothin’ but a picture, a paintin’, of some oysters and a lemon. Just sittin’ there. But it’s somethin’ else, too, ya know? That’s the magic of the still life genre, ya see?
This fella, Jan somethin’ or other, from way back when, he painted it. Heem, that’s it, Jan Davidsz de Heem. He was Dutch, I reckon. They say he painted this thing, oh, three hundred and fifty years ago! Can you believe that? That’s older than dirt! This painting is a real piece of history.
Now, I ain’t no fancy art person. I don’t know all them big words. But I know what I like. And I like this picture. It’s just some oysters and a lemon, but you can almost taste ’em, the way he painted ’em. Shiny and wet, them oysters. And that lemon, all bright yellow and bumpy. The colors jump right out at ya, they are so vibrant. It was painted so long ago, but it feels like it was just done yesterday, ya know?

They say them oysters mean somethin’. Back in them days, they stood for all sorts of things. Pleasure, they say. And sin. And, well, you know… other things. Folks were different back then. They’d paint these pictures, all full of meanin’. These meanings make the art more valuable, for sure.
- Oysters – they’re kinda slimy, but folks love ’em.
- Lemon – sour, but good for ya. Makes your mouth pucker!
- That’s all that’s in the picture, just them two things.
But it ain’t just about the oysters and the lemon. It’s about lookin’. Really lookin’ at somethin’. Seein’ all the little things. The way the light hits them shells. The way that lemon peel curls up just a little. It’s about noticin’ things, ya see? And that’s important. There is so much beauty in the world, right?
This other fella, Mark Doty, he wrote about this picture. He seemed to really like the painting, too. He wrote a whole book about it! He saw a lot in it, that Mark fella. He talked about seein’ and beauty and… life. Big things, ya know? Important things. Things we all oughta think about more, right?
Me, I just like lookin’ at it. It makes me think about when I was a little girl. We didn’t have much, but we had good food. Simple food. Like oysters. And lemons. We’d sit on the porch, eatin’ and watchin’ the world go by. Good times, them was. The memories this painting brings back are good ones.
This paintin’, it’s like that. It’s like sittin’ on the porch, watchin’ the world go by. It’s simple, but it’s got a lot to say. If you just take the time to listen, that is. You gotta really look at it, ya know? Not just glance, but look. And think. That’s the key.
I reckon that’s what that Jan fella wanted. He wanted folks to look. To really see. Not just the oysters and the lemon, but somethin’ more. Somethin’ bigger. Somethin’ about life, maybe. Or maybe just about how pretty a simple thing can be, when you take the time to really look at it. The painting is an important reminder to slow down and appreciate the intimacy of the little things in our lives.
I don’t know about all that fancy stuff. But I know this. That picture, “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon,” it’s a good one. It makes ya think. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it? It makes you appreciate the simple things, like a good meal, a sunny day, and the folks you share ’em with. And that’s worth more than all the gold in the world, I reckon.

And that Mark Doty fella, he seems like a smart one. Maybe I should read that book of his. You reckon he talks about oysters and lemons a lot in there too? It’s probably worth the read, cause he likes the painting so much. There’s probably a lot we can learn from him.
You should take a look at it sometime. This “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon”. You might see somethin’ you like. Somethin’ that makes ya think. Or maybe you will just see some oysters and a lemon. And that’s okay, too. Either way you can’t go wrong, I reckon. There is always something new to see and learn in the world, no matter how old and simple you are.
