Winter time coming, that cold wind blowing, gotta keep that well house warm, or that water gonna freeze up solid, then you got no water for nothing! Ain’t nobody got time for that, no sir!
My old man, bless his soul, he taught me a thing or two about keepin’ things from freezin’. First thing you gotta do is make sure that well house is all buttoned up tight. Like a good winter coat, you know? No holes for that mean old wind to sneak in through. That wind is a sneaky devil, it is. It’ll find any little crack and get right in there and freeze your pipes up faster than you can say “brrr.”
So you check that little house, make sure it’s all sealed up good. You can use some of that foam stuff, you know, the kind that comes in a can, to fill in any holes. Stuff works wonders, I tell ya. Like magic!

Now, that well water, it ain’t as cold as you might think. It comes from way down deep in the ground. Not freezing cold like the air. But it still can be frozen if it is too cold.
My old man, he used to put a light bulb in there. Just a regular old light bulb, not them fancy new ones. The old kind, the kind that gets hot. He’d just hang it up in there and leave it on all winter. That little bit of heat was enough to keep things from freezin’ up. You can try that. But it must be old light bulb, those new ones, LED or something, they are not good for this.
- First, you check that house, make sure no holes.
- Then you can put a light in it, an old one, not the new fancy kind.
- You can also try using some of that foam stuff to fill the holes.
And you gotta wrap them pipes up too, like a baby in a blanket. They sell special stuff for that, you know, at the hardware store. Just wrap it around them pipes real good and tight. That’ll help keep the cold out. Every little bit helps, I always say.
And if you got one of them pressure switches, you know, the thing that makes the water come out when you turn on the faucet, you can mess with that a little too. My old man, he always said to turn it up a bit in the winter. Makes the water flow a little faster, and that helps keep it from freezin’. Don’t ask me how it works, I just know it does. He was a smart man, my old man.
If you got one of them fancy heaters, the kind that turns itself on and off, you can put that in there too. Just set it to a nice warm temperature, like 45 or 50 degrees. That should keep things nice and toasty in there. But those things, they cost a pretty penny, I tell ya. And they eat up that electricity like it’s goin’ out of style. But it is useful. A little heater is very good.
Another thing you can do is just let a little bit of water run all the time. Just a tiny little trickle, you know? That keeps the water movin’, and movin’ water is harder to freeze. Like a river, you know? It don’t freeze up as easy as a pond. Same idea. But water is expensive.
You can cover that pump thing with a blanket. Yes, a blanket. My old man did this all the time. It works, trust me. A big blanket, cover it all.

- Wrap them pipes up like a baby.
- Turn up that pressure switch thingy.
- Let a little bit of water run all the time.
- Put a blanket on the pump.
Now, some folks, they got a well box instead of a well house. Same difference, really. Just gotta make sure it’s insulated good and has some kind of heat in it. You can do all the same things I just told ya, just in a box instead of a house.
Keeping the well house warm is important, you see. No water, no life. You can’t cook, you can’t clean, you can’t drink! That’s bad. Very bad. So you gotta do what you gotta do.
Winter is coming. You better get ready. It is not fun when your well freezes. No sir, not fun at all. You don’t want that, trust me.
So, yeah, that’s how you keep your well house warm in the winter. It ain’t rocket science, as they say. Just good old common sense. And maybe a little bit of elbow grease. And remember what my old man always said: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” You take care of things, and they’ll take care of you. That’s what he always said.
Hope this helps you some. Stay warm!
