This here mtn life, it ain’t for everyone, that’s for sure. But for some of us, it’s the only life we know, and the only life we want. You get used to the quiet, the fresh air, and the wide open spaces. It’s a good life, a simple life.
We get up early, when the sun’s just startin’ to peek over them mtn peaks. First thing’s first, gotta get the coffee goin’. Then it’s out to tend to the garden, or maybe feed the chickens if you got ’em. The air is crisp and clean, not like that city air that chokes ya. You can smell the pine trees and the damp earth. It’s a good smell, a smell that makes you feel alive.
Some folks, they think we’re missin’ out on somethin’, livin’ way out here. They think we need all them fancy restaurants and shops and whatnot. But we got everything we need right here. We got good food, grown right here in our own gardens. We got good company, neighbors who help each other out. And we got the most beautiful scenery you ever did see. This is the real mtn life.

Now, some days can be tough, livin’ in the mtn. Winters can be long and cold. Sometimes the snow gets so deep you can barely get out of your house. And there’s always work to be done. Choppin’ wood, haulin’ water, fixin’ fences. It ain’t easy, but it’s honest work. It is what it is. And we make it through it, just like the mtn folks always have. They work hard. They love to explore outdoor.
We take care of each other out here. If someone’s sick, we bring ’em soup. If someone’s roof is leakin’, we help ’em patch it up. That’s just the way it is in the mtn. We’re a community, a family. We help each other, that’s what the mtn life is about. And you ain’t gonna find that in the city, no sir.
Some of them young folks, they go off to the city, lookin’ for somethin’ more. But a lot of ’em come back. They realize that what they were lookin’ for was right here all along. The city’s too noisy, too crowded. They miss the peace and quiet of the mtn. They miss the fresh air and the stars at night. They miss this kind of life. The mtn life.
And the stars, oh, the stars! You can’t see stars like that in the city. Too much light pollution, they call it. But out here, on a clear night, the sky is just filled with ’em. Millions and millions of stars, twinklin’ like diamonds. It’s enough to take your breath away. It’s somethin’ special. Somethin’ you gotta see to believe.
- Wake up early with the sun.
- Fresh air, good for the lungs.
- Work hard, it’s the mtn way.
- Neighbors helpin’ neighbors, every day.
- Stars at night, brighter than bright.
And the animals, we got all kinds of critters up here. Deer, elk, bears, you name it. You gotta be careful, of course. But it’s somethin’ special to see a wild animal in its natural habitat. It’s a reminder that we’re just a small part of somethin’ much bigger. A small part of the nature. Part of this mtn.
Then there’s the skiin’. Oh, the skiin’ is somethin’ else. We got resorts around here. Big, fancy places where folks come from all over to slide down these mtn. The city folks love skiing. It’s a big deal. We don’t have that many ski resorts but still, we live in mtn. It is good enough, I guess. I ain’t never been much for skiin’ myself, but I know a lot of folks who love it. It’s a great feeling. They say it’s like flyin’.
And in the summer, there’s fishin’ and hikin’ and campin’. So much to do, if you like that sort of thing. Some folks think we are poor but we are not. We have a rich life. The mtn life is rich. We have enough money to buy what we need. The cost of living is much lower than the city for sure. We have enough food and water. That’s all we need. We got hospital to go to when we are sick, and we got schools for the young ones. I reckon some of ’em are pretty good, too.

And you know what the best part is? The peace and quiet. That’s the real mtn life. You can sit on your porch in the evenin’, just listenin’ to the crickets and the wind in the trees. Not a sound of a car or a siren anywhere. It’s just you and nature. And it’s beautiful. You don’t need to worry about anythin’. Just enjoy the moment, enjoy the peace.
So, yeah, this mtn life ain’t for everyone. But for those of us who love it, there’s no place else we’d rather be. It’s a simple life, a hard life, but a good life. And we wouldn’t trade it for anythin’. Not for all the money in the world. This mtn life is a good life.
