This here thing, what they call “haven well within pants,” is somethin’ else, I tell ya. It’s like when you got that old pair of britches, the ones that fit just right, you know? You don’t want nothin’ else. Comfort zone, they call it. It’s safe, it’s what you know. Like my old rocking chair on the porch. Been there for years, seen a lot of sunsets.
But sometimes, sittin’ in that same old chair, you miss out. Miss out on the fair down at the county, miss out on that new pie recipe Mildred’s been braggin’ about. Same with them pants. You stick with what you know, and you might not ever see what else is out there. New things, might be scary, like tryin’ a newfangled machine, but could be good too. You never know till you try.
I remember when that young fella, Johnson’s boy, tried to get me to use one of them computers. Said it would make keepin’ track of my quiltin’ easier. Scared the daylights outta me! All them buttons and lights. But I thought, what the heck, might as well give it a whirl. And you know what? Wasn’t so bad. Learned somethin’ new. Not sayin’ I’m gonna be writin’ no fancy stories on it, but it ain’t as scary as I thought.

So this comfort zone, it’s a tricky thing. Good to have a place to rest your bones, like them old pants. But you gotta be careful. Don’t want to get stuck there. Like a hen that won’t leave her nest, you might miss out on a whole lot of good stuff.
- First thing, you gotta recognize you’re in that comfort zone. Like knowin’ you’ve been wearin’ the same old dress to church for ten years.
- Then, you gotta wanna change. Like decidin’ you’re gonna try that new recipe, even if it might not turn out right.
- And then, you just gotta do it. Take a little step. Try somethin’ new. Might be small, like tryin’ a new vegetable at the market.
- Could be big, like learnin’ to use that computer thingamajig.
It ain’t easy, mind you. Like breakin’ in a new pair of shoes, it might hurt a little at first. You’ll stumble and maybe even fall. But you get back up. Dust yourself off. And try again. That’s how you grow. That’s how you learn. It makes you stronger in long run.
Don’t think you can do it? Well, just try it. Don’t try, you won’t never know. You don’t want to be an old hen that stays on the nest all the time, right? You need to go out, look around, and see what’s new. It might be hard at the beginning, just give it a try, ok?
And if you don’t get out of your comfort zone, you will lose a lot of good things, good chances. Like you don’t know how to use a new machine, you will have to do things old way, that takes more time and more work. I think that’s not good. Don’t be afraid to try new things, if you want to be better.
That’s what life’s all about, ain’t it? Learnin’ and growin’. Tryin’ new things. Even if they scare you a little. Like that time I tried to ride a bicycle. Fell right on my backside! But I got back up. And eventually, I was ridin’ all over town.
Just don’t be stuck in your old ways. Comfort zone is good sometime, but you gotta move on. Try some contests, or write something down, it will be fun. Or learn some new skills, it might bring you more money. You just don’t want to be an old lady who does the same thing every day, right?
So, this “haven well within pants” thing, it’s about more than just old clothes. It’s about life. It’s about being brave enough to try new things, even when it’s scary. It’s about growin’ and learnin’ and not bein’ afraid to fall down every now and then. Cause that’s how you get stronger. That’s how you find out what you’re really made of. It’s about push yourself and try harder, so you can have a better life. You see?
