Well, so you wanna get yourself a job in that fancy-schmancy fashion world, huh? Let me tell ya, it ain’t all glitter and glamor like them magazines show. It’s hard work, I tell ya, hard work! But if you got your heart set on it, then listen up, I’ll tell ya what I know.
First things first, you gotta learn somethin’. These days, they like them fancy degrees and certificates. Says so right here, gotta “get a degree” to “prepare for a career in fashion.” Now, I ain’t got no degree myself, but I know a thing or two about workin’ hard. So, if you can go to one of them fashion schools, that’s good. Learn all about designin’ and sewin’ and all that stuff. They even got places where you can learn to be a “stylist” or a “merchandiser,” whatever that is.
But school ain’t the only way. You can also get your hands dirty, so to speak. Try gettin’ one of them internships. That’s like workin’ for free, or for peanuts, but you learn a lot. You get to see how things work from the inside, meet people, and maybe, just maybe, get your foot in the door. They say “gain industry experience through internships,” and that sounds about right to me.
Now, talkin’ about meetin’ people, that’s mighty important. They call it “networkin’,” sounds fancy, but it just means talkin’ to folks. Go to them fashion shows, if you can sneak in, or them trade shows, or whatever. Talk to people, ask questions, tell ’em you’re lookin’ for a job. You never know who might know somebody who’s lookin’ for somebody like you. Heck, even just chattin’ with the sales ladies at the store might help. You learn what folks are buyin’, what they like. That’s important, you know, knowin’ what folks want.
And you gotta stay up-to-date. Fashion changes faster than the weather in spring. What’s hot today is old news tomorrow. So, read them magazines, look at them websites, see what them fancy designers are doin’. They say “stay updated on trends.” Trends, that’s what’s popular right? Gotta keep up, or you’ll be left in the dust.
- Types of jobs? Well, there’s all sorts. You could be a designer, makin’ them pretty clothes. Or maybe a sales person, sellin’ ’em. There’s folks who plan what goes in the stores, they call ’em “inventory planners” or “retail buyers”. Then there’s the “public relations” folks, the “account managers”, the “stylists” who make people look good. And don’t forget the folks who actually make the clothes, the “production managers” and “quality assurance managers”. It ain’t just drawing pretty pictures all day like they do on that “Project Runway” show. Even got folks called “technical designers”. Lord have mercy, sounds complicated. And there’s a lot more, they even got somethin’ called a “creative director”, sounds important.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ it’s gonna be easy. They say it’s “a really difficult industry to get or find jobs in.” And that’s the truth. Lots of folks want to work in fashion, so you gotta be better than the rest. You gotta be passionate, you gotta be hard-workin’, and you gotta be persistent. Don’t give up if you get rejected. Just keep tryin’, keep learnin’, keep networkin’, and eventually, you’ll find your place.
And one more thing, don’t be afraid to start your own thing. If you can’t find a job, make your own job! Start small, maybe sellin’ your stuff online or at a flea market. If you’re good, and you work hard, who knows, maybe you’ll be the next big thing. It says right here, “consider launching your own brand.” So there you have it.
So, there you have it. My advice on gettin’ a job in fashion. It ain’t gospel, mind you, just what I’ve picked up here and there. But I reckon it’s a good start. Now go out there and make somethin’ of yourself!
